The ratio is calculated as the total value of all traded stocks on the American stock exchanges (usually represented by the Wilshire 5000 market index) divided by the U.S. gross domestic product. For example, for the domestic market, if the total market capitalization for all stocks listed on the BSE is ₹ 135.75 trillion (hypothetical data). India’s nominal GDP is ₹ 152.51 trillion (hypothetical data). This gives us a market capitalization to GDP ratio of around 89%.
